Every week I receive messages from guests asking the same question. “Natasa, the forecast says thunderstorms every day. Is it really going to rain all the time? Should we cancel?” My answer is always the same: No, by all means do not cancel.

After more than a decade of living by the ocean, I’ve come to one conclusion: the challenge with Maldives weather forecasts isn’t that they’re wrong. It’s that they’re simplified and often don’t tell you the whole story. Most weather apps show the probability of rain, not what the day will actually feel like. A rain cloud icon might appear for the entire day, even if the reality is a 20-minute tropical shower followed by hours of sunshine.

Add the fact that the Maldives stretches across hundreds of kilometres of ocean and things become even more complicated. It can be raining on one island while another island, just a short boat ride away, enjoys blue skies. It often happens that we are out on the ocean, watching rain clouds all around us, but we don’t get a single drop. Weather apps, of course, still show a thunderstorm symbol for the day.

The Maldives is a unique country, so I guess it’s only fitting that the weather behaves a little differently too.

So, what is the best month to visit Maldives?

It all depends on the type of traveller you are.

But if you ask me…

• March and April for the calmest seas and the most reliable sunshine
• September, my personal favourite
• November for a great balance of weather and fewer crowds
• June and July for kitesurfers and wind junkies
• May only if you’re a storm chaser or feeling particularly adventurous

These aren’t necessarily the most popular months. You’ve probably noticed that I left out most of the traditional peak-season months. It doesn’t mean I don’t recommend them. Quite the opposite: January, February and December are popular for good reason. I simply wanted to shine a light on a few months that don’t always get the attention they deserve. Some of my best memories in the Maldives happened during these so-called “shoulder” months.
