When’s the best time to visit the Maldives?

Anytime is a good time when paradise is calling! The Maldives is warm and tropical all year long, with daily temps dancing between 28–32°C. The sea temperature is basically perfect, hovering around 28–30°C, like nature’s very own heated infinity pool.

From December to April it’s mostly sunshine, postcard skies, and calm seas. Ideal for beach bums, snorkel lovers, and underwater selfie enthusiasts.

May to November brings more clouds and a refreshing breeze. A dream for kitesurfers and adventure-seekers, with lush green vibes and the occasional warm rain shower to keep things interesting (and your skin glowing). Rain? Yes, it happens. But showers are usually short and sweet, just enough time to grab a coconut, cozy up in a hammock, and wonder why you don’t live here full time.

And don’t worry, if the weather gods throw us a curveball, we’ll shuffle the plan and make sure you still get your dose of island magic. Flexibility is the island way.

Where exactly are you located — and is it worth the trip?

We’re tucked away on Vashafaru, a small local island in the northernmost atoll of the Maldives. Far from the crowds, close to the heart of paradise. It might take a bit longer to get here, but that’s part of the magic. The more remote, the more authentic.

Once you arrive, you’ll quickly realise that this isn’t your average resort experience. This is barefoot luxury, island-style. A boutique guesthouse where your name matters, not your room number. Where days move with the rhythm of the waves and nights are filled with stars and stories. We’re here for travelers who seek something real. Crystal-clear lagoons, untouched beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and warm island hospitality with soul.

How do I reach you?

Getting to us is part of the adventure. And don’t worry, we’ll take care of the tricky bits! All you need to do is book your international flight to Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. From there, we’ve got it all covered. We’ll arrange a domestic flight (about 40 minutes) up to Hanimaadhoo Island. Time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the bird’s-eye view of the atolls. Once you land, our representative will be waiting for you with a smile, ready to escort you to our speedboat for the final leg, a breezy 20-minute ride to Vashafaru. There is no waiting for the speedboat, it is already there for you when you land.

Pro tip: Try to arrive in Malé in the morning or early afternoon, so we can whisk you off to the island the same day. Later arrivals might require an overnight stay in Malé. Not the worst thing, but trust us, you’ll want to get to paradise as soon as possible.

Any tips for finding cheap flights to the Maldives?

Absolutely! Saving on flights means more coconuts and sunset cruises once you’re here! Here are a few tried-and-true travel hacks from your island insiders. Be flexible with your dates. Flying mid-week (especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays) is often cheaper than weekends. A day earlier or later can sometimes save you hundreds. Use flight search engines. Sites like Skyscanner, Google Flights, or Momondo let you compare prices across airlines and track deals. Always buy the ticket directly with the airline, it will save you a lot of time and nerves if something unpredictable happens (like cancelled or rescheduled flights). Online agencies might get you a bit cheaper price, but are notouriously difficult to contact in case of difficulties. Check nearby departure airports. If you have multiple airports near you, compare options, sometimes a short drive means a big difference in price. Book early… but not too early. For international flights, 3–5 months in advance is often the sweet spot for snagging good deals. Travel light. Low-cost airlines might have cheaper base fares, but they’ll charge extra for baggage. Pack wisely or check what’s included. Avoid peak holidays. If you can, steer clear of school holidays, Christmas, New Year’s, and other major celebrations. Both prices and crowds tend to skyrocket. Travel in shoulder season. May, June, and September often come with lower airfare and fewer tourists once you arrive!

Still not sure? Just drop us a message, we’ll happily help you figure it out.

What should I know about staying on a local island in the Maldives?

Staying on a local island is a chance to experience the real Maldives, beyond the polished resort gates. Life here is simple, heartfelt and guided by tradition. That includes a few cultural do’s and don’ts to help you feel right at home. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so respectful behavior and modest dress go a long way. Here’s what that means in practice:

Bikinis are only allowed on the designated ‘bikini beach’. No worries, we’ve got a lovely one just for you, where you can swim, sunbathe and unwind in your usual beachwear. In the village modest clothing is appreciated. Think T-shirts and shorts (mid-thigh or longer is great), dresses that cover the tummy and back, and nothing see-through. For men, T-shirts and shorts are totally fine, sleeveless is also okay. Respecting the dress code isn’t just about rules. It’s a small, but meaningful way to show kindness and appreciation to the local community that warmly welcomes you.

Alcohol is not allowed on local islands, so you won’t find cocktails or wine at guesthouses or in the shops. But don’t worry, we’ve got fresh coconuts and tropical mocktails that taste like paradise.

You might hear the call to prayer during the day. It’s part of daily life here and adds to the island’s peaceful rhythm. It’s beautiful, brief, and part of what makes this place so special.

In return for following a few simple rules, you’ll get something truly rare: genuine connection, authenticity and a glimpse into island life that resort visitors never get to see.

Is it safe to travel to Vashafaru?

Absolutely! Vashafaru is one of the safest little corners of the world. Life moves slowly here, doors are often left unlocked and neighbours know each other by name (and probably by favorite fish dish too!). It’s not just safe, it’s peaceful. Whether you’re walking to the beach at sunrise or strolling under the stars at night, you’ll feel a deep sense of ease that’s hard to come by these days.

Solo travelers, including women, can feel completely comfortable and welcome. Our island community is respectful, friendly and always ready with a smile (and maybe a coconut). You’ll likely return with more friends than you came with. Of course, we always recommend basic travel common sense, but truthfully, Vashafaru is the kind of place where your biggest worry might be losing track of time while watching the sunset.

Do I need any vaccinations before traveling to Vashafaru?

No vaccinations are required for entering the Maldives, so you’re good to go!
That said, if you’re unsure or just like to be extra prepared, we recommend checking the travel health guidelines from your home country or having a quick chat with your doctor before your trip. We like to keep things easy and breezy, but a little peace of mind never hurts.

Do I need a visa for the Maldives?

For most nationalities a 30-day tourist visa is granted on arrival and it is free of charge. Just make sure you have a few things ready: A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date, a return flight ticket and a confirmed booking for your entire stay in the Maldives. Airlines often check these before letting you board. If something’s missing, they might not let you fly, so double-check in advance.

All travelers must fill out the IMUGA arrival form online within 96 hours before entering the country. It’s just a basic form with few personal information and your photo and it is completely free.
Fill it out here: http://travel.immigration.gov.mv

⚠️ Watch out for fake websites trying to charge you, there are no charges for Imuga. Use the link we provided above and always make sure that you are on the official page ending with gov.mv.

Is there a doctor on the island?

Yes, there is! Vashafaru has a local doctor available 24/7, so basic medical care is always close at hand. For anything more serious, the nearest clinic with hospital facilities is just a 5-minute boat ride away and the regional hospital (with more advanced care) is about 40 minutes by boat.

In case of emergencies, a sea ambulance service is also available. Island life may be remote, but you’re never far from help, if you need it.

What about money?

The local currency is called Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US dollars are also widely accepted, especially in tourist areas (including our guesthouse). We recommend bringing USD from home, as you can’t buy dollars once you’re here. Make sure your bills are clean, crisp, and printed after the year 2000 – no scribbles, rips, or wrinkles, or they might get politely refused.

There are ATMs at both airports and even one on our island if you need a cash top-up. Card payments are possible in some places, but banks often charge commission, especially on foreign cards.

At Charming Maldives, we keep things simple: we accept cash in USD or Maldivian Rufiyaa. Sorry, no euros and no cards, just good old island-style honesty and smiles.

Where will I stay and can I choose the house?

We have two cozy guesthouses, each with its own charm and yes, you’re welcome to choose where you’d like to stay. Just let us know when you book, and we’ll do our best to make it happen!

Aqua Cottage is our newest hideaway, nestled just a coconut’s throw (okay, about 50 meters!) from Bikini Beach. Surrounded by palm trees and birdsong, it’s perfect for beach lovers and those craving peace and quiet. A little tropical cocoon with four rooms and a warm island vibe.

Aquavilla is our original guesthouse, a home with soul, just steps from the sea and the local village life. It has three comfy rooms and is also where our restaurant lives, so you’re always close to good food and friendly chatter.

Whether you’re after beachside serenity or village charm, both houses offer a boutique, homey experience.

What kind of food do you serve?

At Charming Maldives, we serve a blend of local flavors and Western favorites, so there’s something tasty for every kind of traveler. All meals are buffet-style, giving you the freedom to pick and choose whatever calls to your appetite that day. You can choose between half board (breakfast + dinner) or full board (all three meals), depending on how hungry your adventures make you. We’re flexible, if you booked half board and would like to have lunch also, just let us know a day in advance.

Our dishes are not spicy, but if you’re feeling brave and want to eat like a true Maldivian, we’ve got chili on the side to crank up the heat.

We also happily cater to vegetarians, vegans, and guests with allergies . Just give us a heads-up when booking, so our kitchen crew can work their magic and make sure everyone’s well-fed and happy.

What about drinks? Can I drink the tap water?

Let’s start with the basics. Tap water isn’t safe to drink, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We provide unlimited drinking water, so you can stay refreshed and hydrated all day long. And trust us you’ll want to drink plenty! The tropical sun is no joke, and it’s easy to get dehydrated without even realising it.

As for something warm and cozy, coffee (Nescafé) and tea are available 24/7 and included in your stay. Perfect for early risers or midnight thinkers. If you’re a serious caffeine connoisseur, we’ve got coffee capsules available for a little extra, because sometimes only a proper espresso will do, even on a palm-fringed island.

No alcohol here (it’s a local island, after all), but plenty of coconut water and tropical vibes to sip and enjoy.

Can we buy or drink alcohol on the island?

Here’s the scoop: Vashafaru is a local island, which means alcohol is not allowed. Not in shops, restaurants, or guesthouses. It’s part of Maldivian law and local muslim customs and we kindly ask all guests to respect this important rule.

We know a sunset cocktail or chilled beer might be part of your usual holiday dream, but trust us, island life has its own kind of buzz. Think fresh coconut water on the beach, a mocktail with sea breeze, or laughing under the stars after a long day of snorkeling.

And hey, you might just discover that your most memorable moments here come without a glass in hand.

How strong is the sun really? (Spoiler: very!)

The Maldivian sun is no joke. It’s fierce, tropical, and always working overtime (even when it’s a bit cloudy). That golden tan can quickly turn into a fiery lobster situation if you’re not careful, so here’s our island advice. Bring high SPF sunscreen and not just as a suitcase decoration! Reapply after every swim, and then some. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, good sunglasses and a light cover-up if you’re planning a full day out. After-sun lotion is your skin’s best friend, use it generously to keep your skin hydrated and happy. If you do get sunburnt, please stay in the shade, use plenty of soothing gel and if it’s really bad, don’t hesitate to see the island doctor for some extra care.

What to pack for island life (besides a big smile 😎)

Packing for Vashafaru doesn’t require much — think light, breezy, and barefoot-friendly. But here are a few things you’ll want to have in your bag to make the most of your time with us:

Sunscreen – High SPF and reef-safe if possible. Bring plenty, it’s gold here!
Hat & Sunglasses – Your face will thank you.
Swimwear – At least two sets (you’ll live in them).
T-shirts & Shorts – Lightweight, breathable, and modest for walking around the village.
Casual Dresses or Cover-ups – Easy and comfy.
Flip-flops or sandals – Cancel the shoes, most of the time you’ll be barefoot anyway.
Rashguard – Great for snorkeling or sun-sensitive skin.
Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated and keep the island clean.
Snorkeling Gear – Optional, we provide it, but if you have a favorite mask, bring it!
Camera or GoPro – For all the magical moments.
Passport & Travel Documents – Check that passport validity again (6 months!).
Personal Medication – Include seasickness pills if you’re unsure.
Eco-friendly Toiletries – Help us keep the reef happy.
A Good Book – We do have a small library, but feel free to bring your own books – for lazy hammocks and ocean breezes.
A Little Extra Space – You might leave lighter in stress but heavier in souvenirs.

And of course, don’t forget your curiosity, your sense of adventure, and your appetite for fresh coconuts.

Let’s talk about the uninvited guests… mosquitos

Yes, we have them. Maldives may be paradise, but even paradise has a few mosquitoes. Don’t worry though, we’ve learned to live together (mostly peacefully), and with a few tricks, so will you. Best protection is the local mosquito lotion. It smells nicer, works better, and can be found in our little island shops. If you’re bringing your own, make sure it’s the jungle edition. The regular stuff just won’t do the job here.
Especially on the bikini beach, they do like to sneak up during the day – anti-mosquito sticks are going to be your best friends. You can buy them at our local shops.

Mosquitos are usually most active early morning and at sunset, but don’t be fooled, they might pay a visit even under the midday sun. So keep that lotion handy, especially if you’re the one member of the family that they adore.

Is there something to do?

Whether you’re the kind who wants to snorkel with mantas at sunrise, hop islands by lunchtime, and dance with dolphins by sunset or you prefer to perfect the art of hammock lounging, book reading, and slow sipping coconuts by the sea, we’ve got you covered. Jump to our activities section for all available trips and pricing.

With so many activities on offer, there’s no shortage of adventure. But if your idea of a perfect day is simply walking barefoot on warm sand, watching the waves roll in, and doing a whole lot of nothing… well, we won’t judge. In fact, we might just join you.

There is no need to book ahead, all activities can be arranged on the spot, whenever the mood strikes.

Is there wifi available?

Free WiFi is available throughout our guesthouses. Perfect for sending a quick “wish you were here” or uploading your sunset snaps. But let’s be honest, the best connection here is with nature.

If you really need reliable internet (hello, digital nomads or remote workers!), we recommend picking up an eSIM or a tourist SIM at Malé airport. It’s easy, fast, and usually with plenty of data to spare.

You made it to the end!

If you’ve read this far, we’re seriously impressed and we promise, your holiday will be so much easier (and sweeter) because of it. You’re officially ready to trade scrolling for snorkeling, meetings for mangoes, and deadlines for dolphins. So kick off your shoes, pat yourself on the back, and start counting the days. Paradise is waiting and you’ve earned every blissful second of it.

And hey, if we forgot to mention something, or you couldn’t find the info you need, just drop us a message through the contact form. We’re only ever a click (and a coconut) away.

See you under the palm trees!

We’re here for you
